Kyoto, climate plans 'not in our interests'

Posted at 11:43 on 29 October, 2007

John Howard has again defended his avoidance of the Kyoto Protocol and climate plans put forward by opponents saying that they are not in the economical interest of Australia. Is a compromise on the economy and climate best, or is the environment just too important to be a tightarse about?

28 Oct 07 just because others aren't doing their bit, doesn't mean we can avoid our part.

always about money with howard.
change is coming
30 Oct 07 I reckon Mr. Howard is a hoot, love him! At least when giving speeches, he can ad lib then, not like that Fudd bloke, has to reaad it all and shake his bloody hand. You'd have to agree, Fudd looks like one of those bloody Oz Idle blokes singing

30 Oct 07 Mike,
I don't know what you're on about, but you're an idiot.

I agree with the first poster. I'll add this - he does not know what is in out 'national interest'. I'm sick of him using this term to justify his stupid policies.

30 Oct 07 just because we haven't ratified kyoto doesn't mean we're not doing our bit for the environment. we're just doing it our own way. i agree with howard, (for once) ratifying kyoto would cost australian jobs and it would put huge pressure on the economy. he's already pledged money to stop green house gass emissions, and even if he did ratify kyoto, the obligations would be just monitor and report.
where as rudd is appealing on the surface, howard is prepared to get the work done.

31 Oct 07 World Bank report just released shows that Australia's emissions increased 38% over a period - not good.

What I find weird is that on climate change, Howard plays the "We're only a drop in the ocean, China and India are the worst" card. Then on water usage, Turnbull is telling families to install drippers - residents are a drop in the ocean! If you want to be consistent, force the commercial users (especially rice and cotton growers!) to pay a premium or get out of business in their non-sustainable trade!
enough is enough
