500 dogs in Victoria blacklisted

Posted at 00:00 on 17 December, 2007

More than 500 dogs in Victoria have been blacklisted for being a danger to society. Pit bull terriers and guard dog rottweilers and german shepherds are the bulk of aggressive animals on an official state register. But there are concerns scores more dangerous dogs are being harboured by owners refusing to declare or register them. Do you agree with this move?

28 Dec 07 I'd say that there are a lot more dangerous people on the streets than dangerous dogs.

24 Mar 08 Any breed can be bred to be aggressive. The reason why there are 500 banned breeds is that most of them are obscure breeds with few examples worldwide. If you're into dogfighting and your dog gets banned what do you? You import another one from an obscure breed from South America that you've heard is especially aggressive. Or you breed your own. Two different breeds mate and you have a new breed. Banning 'dangerous' dogs is impossible and solely a political stunt that will achieve no extra community safety and only hamper legitimate dog owners. Simple laws against cruelty and holding owners properly accountable for their animals is all that is required.
